Le Canot de Sauvetage Benoît Champy

The "Benoît Champy" is a genuine 19-20th century lifeboat, with sails and oars, built in 1887. Find out about the history of sea rescue on the Picardy coast. The lifeboat and its shelter are listed historical monuments.

About

Between 1901 to 1956 the lifeboat, "Benoît Champy", went to sea many times to help boats in difficulty. Designed to face the worst conditions at sea, this sail-oar lifeboat, 10.10 metres long, with a crew of 12 men, was unsinkable, self-righting, had automatic water drainage and needed 12 horses to be launched. Today it is a listed historical monument and is carefully maintained by the 'Association des Pompons Rouges'. Open Saturday morning, 9.30am to 12.30pm, all year round, every day in July/August, 3 to 6pm. No admission charge, book ahead for groups.
