The narrow, flower-decked streets lead you to a lovely surprise: the Herbarium des Remparts. Push the openwork gate (through which many a curious visitor has peeped) and discover all the treasures of this garden: rare and ancient vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants. Just sniff the air ...
The Herbarium, enclosed in brick and flint walls, dominates the town's medieval ramparts. It comprises a wonderfully 'ordered jumble' of plants grown in the Middle Ages. More botanical than ornamental, this garden will nevertheless please gardeners, both beginners and experienced ! The Fruticetum is a modern interpretation of a medieval garden. The colour blue pays tribute to "Woad", a dye-producing plant that was of great value in the Middle Ages. The town's flower-decked streets, along with the Herbarium and Fruticetum, form the "gardens of the Baie" and make it such a joy to walk around Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.
